Summoning Eye Drop Rates – Hypixel Skyblock

Recently, my brother and I have been playing a ton of Hypixel Skyblock. We’re in the late game, and recently bought our first 50 million midas sword. After farming a ton of zealots for money in order to afford the sword, I was curious to know the summoning eye drop rates, and how many eyes the average player gets after slaying 1000 zealots.

How Do We Get Summoning Eyes?

A summoning eye has a 100% chance from dropping from a Special Zealot. A Special Zealot looks like a normal Zealot, but is holding an end portal frame. Zealots holding an ender chest are not Special Zealots. Those Zealots can drop Enchanted End Stone, Enchanted Obsidian, Enchanted Ender Pearls, or Crystal Frags.

Located in the end dimension, any of the naturally-spawning lv. 55 13,000 health Zealot Endermen (located in the dragon’s nest) can spawn in a Special Zealot. There is a 1/420 chance of this happening. Special Zealots have much less health than a regular Zealot. It gets aggressive just like a normal Zealot, but does much less damage.

Zealots spawned using ender pearls are not capable of summoning a Special Zealot.

Once a normal Zealot spawns in a Special Zealot, the player who “owns” the special zealot will get a message in their chat window “A special Zealot has spawned nearby!“. Other nearby players can see the Special Zealot, even though it doesn’t belong to them. Other players can slay the Special Zealot, but its drops can only be picked up by the Zealot’s “owner”, unless 5 seconds have passed since the Special Zealot has been slain and the Summoning Eye has not been picked up yet. Summoning eyes belong to the person who spawned in the Special Zealot, not the person that killed it.

Stealing Special Zealots

It is possible to yoink someone else’s Special Zealot. After the Special Zealot is slain, the owner (whoever summoned it) has pickup priority for 5 seconds after the eye drops onto the ground. The person who kills the special Zealot will get the message RARE DROPSummoning Eye even if they are not the owner of the special Zealot. The Summoning Eye will drop on the ground until the summoner picks it up, or 5 seconds have passed. After 5 seconds have passed and the summoner has not picked it up, the eye becomes available to be picked up by anyone.

If the special Zealot has not been slain for more than 10 seconds after it has been spawned, then the eye will go straight into the inventory of whoever kills it, and there is no pickup priority.

Unless you have “A special Zealot has spawned nearby!” appear in your chat window, its summoning eye does not belong to you.

Another strategy to be wary for is the Aspect of the Dragons Knockback strategy. It involves using the AOTD ability to launch someone else’s Special Zealot far away enough so they can’t locate it. Knockbacks are always in a straight line, and they can only use it once, since the cooldown for the ability is 5 seconds. If they successfully knock it far away enough that you can’t find it, then they successfully stole your summoning eye.

Tips For Locating Your Special Zealot

Once you get the chat message “A special Zealot has spawned nearby!” and you get a huge red popup appear on your screen, and you hear a “ding” noise, then you frantically start looking around for your special Zealot. Here are some tips I’ve come up with for finding your special Zealot:

  • The Special Zealot will spawn within 10 blocks from where you were standing. If you don’t immediately see it after doing a quick 360…
  • Keep your inventory open! Even if you don’t immediately see it, someone else might have killed it and the eye is somewhere on the ground. Having empty spaces in your inventory will help increase your chances of finding it.
  • Check behind pillars. If you’re near the dragon’s nest, then you might want to check around corners. But remember, it’s within 10 blocks, so it can’t have wandered too far from where it spawned.
  • Look around for players standing still. Players who saw and killed your Special Zealot faster than you did will try to pick it up. They can’t pick it up for 5 seconds, so just run over to where they are.

zealot-spawning-example

Here’s an example of where a Special Zealot could spawn hidden from view. See that Zealot on the left? If that one was to spawn in the Special, then the Special could spawn behind the pillar to its right. I’ve had that happen to me a couple times.

Fun fact: you can get Special Zealots when the server is closing and during dragon fights. However, if the server closes, or if the dragon fight ends, all mobs will disappear. If the dragon dies and you haven’t slain your Special Zealot, then the Zealot disappears without dropping anything.

Zealot Counter

Using Skyblock Addons by Biscuit, they have a Zealot counter that lets you see how many Zealots you’ve killed since your last eye.

However, it only tracks melee kills (for example, with a Raider’s Axe).

When using weapons such as an Explosive Bow or Frozen Scythe, those kills do count towards spawning your Special Zealot, but don’t increment the displayed counter on your end.

Using these non-melee slaying methods, you can get some pretty funny results.

Unlucky? No worries, there’s a Pity System in place.

After a player has slain 420 Zealots in one session and a Special Zealot still has not been summoned, then the summoning rate will double to 1/210 per Zealot slain. This only occurs once, and caps out at 1/210.

Once a Special Zealot has been summoned, then the counter will reset back to 0, and the player has to defeat another 420 Zealots before their chances are raised again.

Some players are super lucky, and some aren’t. It is possible for a Special Zealot to summon in another Special Zealot, according to some users on the Hypixel Forums.

Does Magic Find Work?

The Looting Enchantment and Magic Find potions do not affect the spawn rate of the Special Zealots. Those only affect the dropped items from the Zealot. Since the Special Zealot has a 100% chance of dropping a summoning eye, using Magic Find to raise it even higher has no effect.

Vampire Mask?

The vampire mask (or frozen blaze set) allows you to deal damage to Zealots without hitting it, allowing it to be 2-shotted. This boosts summoning eye drop rates by 10%.

Assuming that the vampire mask activates half the time, since half the time since you’re competing with others in the lobby for Zealots and you don’t have time to wait for the ability to activate, a 5% increase in Zealot spawn rates is barely noticeable.

Remember that statistics is random. You can more-easily understand this concept with flipping a coin. You should land heads half the time and tails half the time right? Let’s say you get heads 3 times in a row. As you can see, statistics is random.

So, the vampire mask may appear to lower your rates if you get unlucky, or have no effect at all, but in reality, it increases your eye count very slightly. It might be better to run a full young set instead for that extra speed.

Explosive Bow?

There’s a myth that the Explosive Bow lowers your Special Zealot spawn chances. This is not true. It’s a myth likely spread around by those who want to lower the use of the Explosive bow.

When using the Explosive Bow, you should stand on top of one of the obsidian pillars and shoot at the ground of where the Zealots spawn. Switching to an End Sword when the arrow is about to land can help you one-shot, as well as wearing Unstable or Strong Dragon Armor, if you can’t afford Superior Dragon Armor.

The reason I don’t recommend using an Explosive Bow is that the playerbase gets super annoyed at people who use Explosive Bows. If you use one, you will likely have other players calling you names and making rude comments about certain body parts. Although the majority of the playerbase is nice and won’t make any comments about Explosive Bow users, the backlash from the vocal minority might be unsettling for some players.

I recommend using a full Young set with potions to farm instead. You can buy splashes from others in the Hub, or leach a splash. I have a guide on how to get free splashes HERE.

Does Switching Lobbies Reset the Zealot Counter?

Additionally, killing other player’s special zealots do not reset the doubled spawn rate. The doubled chances and counter are only reset once the game decides to spawn in a special zealot for you. This also means that swapping end lobbies does not reset the counter to 420, and disconnecting also does not reset the counter. This is because this feature is coded the same way that all other less-than-1%-chance drops are coded.

Here’s another look at the Special Zealot. I waited a bit for the red text to disappear to get this shot.

How Lucky Are You?

We know that summoning eyes are quite rare, but how rare are they?

After slaying 420 Zealots in a row, your chance of not getting an eye is 36.7% (419/420)^420. This means that your chance of getting at least 1 eye after slaying 420 zealots is 63.3%.

After slaying 1000 Zealots in a row, your chance of not getting an eye is 2.3%. This means that your chance of getting at least 1 eye after slaying 1000 Zealots is 97.8%.

After slaying 1500 Zealots in a row, your chance of not getting an eye is 0.2%. This means that your chance of getting at least 1 eye after slaying 1500 Zealots is 99.8%.

Below is a chart I made on your chance of receiving at least one eye, based on how many Zealots you’ve slain.

Notice the “bump” at 420 Zealots – that is due to the increased drop chance after not receiving any eyes for 420 zealots.

The data for this can be found on this Google Spreadsheet (columns Q-S).

Number of Zealots Per Percentile

25th percentile 120.6825722
50th percentile 290.7751046
75th percentile 500.6787141
90th percentile 692.641258
95th percentile 837.8553166
98th percentile 1029.81786
99th percentile 1175.031919
99.5th percentile 1320.245978
99.9th percentile 2139.813241

A sample calculation for the 25th percentile would be by creating the equation
(419/420)ˣ = 1 – 0.25
You can then simply solve this using logs.
log₄₁₉/₄₂₀(0.75) = 120.68

I wrote a quick program which simulated 50,000 players slaying 1,000 zealots each to see how many summoning eyes each person would get.

You can see/download/modify my code on github.com. You can see the raw data for this on this Google Spreadsheet (Columns A-C).

The average summoning eyes for slaying 1,000 Zealots is 2.7339 summoning eyes.

The standard deviation for this was 1.42 summoning eyes.

Here’s the above graph turned into percentages:

As you can see from this spreadsheet, summoning eyes are very random! Of the 50,000 players, only 4 of them got 11 eyes, and 1,147 of them didn’t get any eyes at all. This means that after slaying 1,000 Zealots, there is roughly a 2% chance that you will not get any eyes.

Average Zealots/Eye

With an average of 2.7339 summoning eyes after slaying 1,000 Zealots, this means that the average number of zealots you would need to slay before getting an eye should be 365.93 zealots. However, you should have an average of around 340-342 Zealots. The reason our average was higher was because our “maximum” tally without Zealots was 1,000 but in-game, you can get much higher than 1,000 Zealot kills without any eyes. I’ve heard stories of players not getting them up till the low 2,000’s.

Below is a chart of 50,000 players slaying Zealots until they get one eye. Data for this can be found on the same Google Spreadsheet linked above, in columns W-Z.

We would highly recommend you farm eyes with a Legendary Enderman pet, since that increases the Special Zealot spawning rate by 25% (1.25/420 ≈ 1/336), which should make your average to be somewhere around 287.34 zealots per eye at max level.

If you use both a Legendary Enderman Pet and a Vampire Mask/Frozen Blaze set, the damage inflicted by those armor will count as you not one-shotting the Zealot, meaning you get an extra 10% boost. So, with a 35% boost (1.35/420 ≈ 1/311), you should have an average of about 269.87 zealots per eye, assuming a max level Enderman pet.

Testing Out Our Theoretical Data

I installed the Zealot counter for myself to see if my data was accurate. I did not use the Legendary Enderman Pet or a Vampire Mask. Here are my results:

ZealotCounterLoot

After slaying 38,408 Zealots, I average around 340 Zealots per eye, which puts me at slightly luckier than average, since the expected theoretical average is around 341.

Why Farm Summoning Eyes?

According to the Hypixel Web View Auction House: https://auctions.craftlink.xyz/ or https://hypixel.black/skyblock/auctions/, Summoning eyes are selling for a lot of money, above 500,000 coins.

This is a good way to make some quick profit, especially if you get multiple summoning eyes in a row.

Summoning Eye Simulator Website

If you want to try farming Zealots without actually doing it in-game, you can try it here:

https://skyblock.tcreopargh.xyz/eye-simulator-en/

What are Summoning Eyes Used For?

Summoning eyes are used to summon an ender dragon. 8 summoning eyes are required to summon it. If you place at least one summoning eye, you will get increased drops from the dragon fight compared to if you don’t place any eyes.

Expected Loot From Zealots

A Hypixel member by the username xXBoshunterXx posted their loot from slaying 10,000 and 15,000 Zealots, to which you can see here:

https://hypixel.net/attachments/15k-zealot-diagram-png.1467781/

How Many Eyes Does One End Lobby Produce?

In one end lobby, up to 28 players can be farming eyes at the same time (lobby sizes are 28). There are 16 Zealot spawning locations around the Dragon’s Nest, and each one spawns in 1 Zealot every 10 seconds. Assuming no one has a Legendary Enderman Pet, and everyone one-shots, then someone should get an eye on average every 3 minutes and 33.7 seconds (213.7 seconds). So, in an hour, the entire lobby should average about 17 eyes per hour.

  1. Are you sure you’re correctly accounting for the probability boost after 420 kills? I ran a simulation on Python of over 30 million Zealot kills and found the player would get a Summoning Eye about every 342.837 kills. In your simulation, it approximated that 9% of players would get no Summoning Eye after 1,000 kills which is wayyyyyyy off from the theoretical 2.3% that you previously stated. With such a large sample size, I don’t see how this deviation could be seen in a valid simulation.

    • Thanks for noticing. I forgot to increment the Zealots killed by 1 each time, thus the chance doubling never took effect. I will fix that shortly.
